Die simple Aufforderung »Strebe nach hoher Begeisterung!«, welche der Komponist und Musikschriftsteller Johann Friedrich Reichardt 1782 im Musikalischen Kunstmagazin angehenden Künstler:innen mitgibt, leitet Viktor Töpelmann in seinem Wirken als Instrumentalist, Dirigent, Wissenschaftler und Pädagoge.

Viktor Töpelmann studierte Musik am King’s College London und Barockvioloncello und Viola da gamba an der Royal Academy of Music London und an der Hochschule für Musik Köln. Von 2011 bis 2015 war er Stipendiat der King’s College Graduate School und wurde 2016 mit einer Arbeit über das kulturelle Umfeld der Familie Mozart in Salzburg promoviert.

Als Musiker vereint Viktor Töpelmann instrumentale Exzellenz auf der Viola da gamba und dem Barockvioloncello, eine lebendige Freude an der Musik und profunde wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse der historischen Aufführungspraxis und musikgeschichtlicher Zusammenhänge des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts. Er konzertiert international als Cellist und Gambist und leitet als Dirigent Aufführungen barocker Opern und Oratorien oder reine Orchester- und Chorkonzerte. Zahlreiche Aufnahmen, wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, sowie seine akribisch konzipierten Konzert- und CD-Programme weisen ihn als kreativen Musikforscher und inspirierenden Musiker aus. 2025 wurde er als Professor für historische Aufführungspraxis an die Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln berufen.

The ideal of joining “head, heart and hand” Viktor Töpelmann strives to be a well-rounded musician: he is an eminent performer on the viol and the baroque cello with a passionate enthusiasm for early music. His profound knowledge of performing practices and of the historical and intellectual environment, in which the music was composed and performed, provides a rich source of inspiration for a creative approach to music making today.

Viktor Töpelmann read music at King’s College London and studied baroque cello and viola da gamba at the Royal Academy of Music London and at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. In 2016 he was awarded a PhD in historical musicology at King’s College London, which was fully funded by the King’s College Graduate School.

Equally in demand as cellist and viol-player, Viktor Töpelmann performes widely as soloist, chamber musician and orchestra member. He relishes the diversity of historical string instruments of the 8-foot register and performs on various types of baroque cellos and viols. He appeared at some of the most prestigious festivals and concert venues throughout Europe and in Asia. From 2015 to 2022, he was the artistic director of the Munich based chamber choir Vokal Ensemble München. As musicologist he has researched and published widely on the Mozart family, Salzburg culture in the 18th century and historical string instruments. In 2025 he has been appointed as professor of historical performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
